You are lying; rather you acquired knowledge so that it would be said that you were a scholar, and you recited Qur’aan so that it would be said that you were a reciter.
And acting upon knowledge – from it is that which, (if a person) leaves it, then it is kufr.
And from it is that which (if a person) leaves it, then it is an act of disobedience.
And from it is that which (if a person) leaves it, then it is something disliked.
And from it is that which (if a person) leaves it, then it is something permissible.
In their (our salaf’s) words is sufficiency and more, there is no truth that one finds in the words of those who came after except that it can be found in their words in the most succinct and comprehensive of ways.
Just as the cause of a disease in the body cannot be treated except with its anti-medication – if it is caused by heat, its medication is to be with cold and vice versa – also ill morals, which are caused by diseases of the heart, are to treated with their opposites; so ignorance is to be treated with knowledge, Stinginess with generosity, pride with humility, and greed with avoiding the desired object.
Some of the Salaf would display sadness on the day of Eid. It was said to them: This is a day of happiness and joy! They would respond: You have spoken the truth, but I am a servant, my Lord has ordered me to perform an action but I am not sure if He will accept it from me or not.
