Some Traits of Knowledge Seekers

Shaykh ‘Abdul ‘Aziz ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad Aal ash-Shaykh حفظه الله :

The knowledge seeker is distinguished by some traits, which include:

• His pursuit of goodness wherever it may exist;

• He loves goodness, strives for it and invites others to it.

• He is the one known for his wisdom in times of hardship, and for his forbearance and discernment, his understanding and judgment of matters in the light of the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم.

• A knowledge seeker has a distinguished personality, as Allah makes him a key to solve all issues.

• You will not find him acting rashly without forethought; rather, he is tolerant and carefully deliberates matters.

• His heart bears jealousy and zeal for Allaah’s Religion and enthusiasm for supporting it. However, he is heedful to reason in all matters.

• Thus, his tongue utters only the truth, neither going too far nor committing injustice. He keeps himself away from gossip which is the worst evil committed.

• A knowledge seeker considers his words when speaking and weighs them with the just scale of Shari’ah.

• A knowledge seeker, when treating or warning against an error, adheres to fairness and rationality in all situations.

• You will never see a true knowledge seeker being rash in his speech with others, nor passing judgments on people based on generalizations, without proper and sound knowledge.

• Judging matters among people, whether in sayings or actions, should be based on tangible and factual evidence.

Whoever weighs his opinions and words before uttering them, will – with Allah’s Help – achieve the desired goal.

• A knowledge seeker often keeps in mind Allaah’s Statement: {{ O you who believe! If a Fasiq (liar – evil person) comes to you with any news, verify it, lest you should harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful for what you have done. }} [Qur’an, Surah al-Hujjurat (49):6]

• A knowledge seeker is fair and just in passing judgments. Allaah states: {{ O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allaah as just witnesses; and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just }} [Qur’an, Surah al-Ma’idah (5):8]

• A knowledge seeker never thinks evil of others or unjustly makes haphazard accusations against them.

• Rather, he reflects on matters and always invites to good and reformation according to the principles of Shari`ah and not based on emotions that lead to inappropriate behavior.

• You will see him well-balanced in all his affairs and passing judgments based on sound and correct stances.

• A knowledge seeker should never be a yes-man who spreads all what is said.

• Rather, he weighs matters and statements with a just scale in order to speak the clear word of truth without extremism or negligence.
