Yoosuf of this Ummah – Jareer ibn Abdullaah al-Bajali

Jareer ibn ‘Abdullaah al-Bajali (رضي الله عنه) was a handsome companion and had a beautiful face and this is why he was likened to Prophet Yoosuf (عليه السلام) by the great companion ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) who gave him the title of being the “Yoosuf of this Ummah” .

‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) used to say: “Jareer is the Yoosuf (Joseph) of this Ummah (Muslim nation).

Imam Ibn Katheer (رحمه الله تعالى) mentions in his book “al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah):

Jareer ibn ‘Abdullaah al-Bajali (رضي الله عنه) submitted to Islam in the month of Ramadan in the 10th year of the Hijrah.

He bravely came forward when the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) had just said in a sermon: “One to whom good fortune and prosperity belongs will boldly come forward from the road between the two mountains. On his face is the mark of a King.

Then when Jareer ibn ‘Abdullaah al-Bajali (رضي الله عنه) came in, the people scurried to look at him and he was just as the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) described him – All praise is for Allaah.

This incident is reported in many books including Adab al-Mufrad, (no. 250), Fath al-Baree, (7/132), Musnad Ahmad, (4/364), an-Nisaa’i in “al-Kubra”, 5/82, (no. 8304), at-Tabraani, 2/352-353, (no. 2483) and al-Haakim, (1/285) who said “This hadeeth is Saheeh upon the conditions of al-Bukhari and al-Muslim”

Shaykh Muhammad Naasiruddin al-Albanee (رحمه الله تعالى) has also classed it as Saheeh in his book, Silsilah al-Hadeeth as-Saheehah, 7/586, (no. 3193), and Saheeh Adab al-Mufrad, (1/111)

It states in the Saheehain that Jareer (رضي الله عنه) said:

“The prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) did not screen himself from me (i.e. he would never prevent me from entering upon him) since I embraced Islam, and when he (صلى الله عليه وسلم) saw me, he (صلى الله عليه وسلم) would receive me with a smile.”
